AAASF accredited by IEEA

Known as the accreditor of accreditors, ISQua External Evaluation Association (IEEA) accreditation of standards includes a self-assessment, external survey and requires evidence of continuous quality improvement.

AAAASF was established in 1980 to develop an accreditation programme to standardise and improve the quality of medical and surgical care in US ambulatory surgery facilities while assuring the public of high standards for patient care and safety in an accredited facility. AAAASF is the largest not-for-profit accrediting organisation in the USA.

AAAASF conducts an accreditation programme that certifies that an accredited facility meets nationally recognised standards. AAAASF has designed an accrediting programme to help provide patients with the assurance of safety and quality in all aspects of their outpatient surgery experience. Every AAAASF-accredited ambulatory surgery facility must meet stringent national standards for equipment, operating room safety, personnel and surgeon credentials.

Until 2009, the organisation limited itself to the USA. It expanded into countries where the majority of medical tourists are Americans requiring outpatient treatment. This may be very attractive to small hospitals and clinics for which international accreditation by JCI or others is not cost-effective compared to the volume of Americans treated.

AAAASFI has developed a global programme to inspect and accredit surgery, physical therapy and dental clinics. All accredited clinics must pass inspection of all practice standards in the following categories: general environment and safety, operating room environment, policies and procedures, recovery room environment, blood and medications, medical records, quality assessment, personnel and anaesthesia.
