CMS renews DNV GL Healthcare's accreditation authority

The deeming authority allows DNV GL Healthcare to accredit hospitals to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, the two largest revenue streams for hospitals and other healthcare providers in the United States.

Patrick Horinet of DNV GL Healthcare:  "Just as we expect of our accredited hospitals, we too must demonstrate that we use effective processes. The breadth and depth of the CMS review is absolutely necessary as we continue growing at such a rapid pace."

DNV GL Healthcare first received its deeming authority from CMS in 2008. It accredited its 500th U.S. hospital in 2018, and is now the nation's second-largest healthcare accreditation body.

DNV GL Business Assurance is a global certification body. Within healthcare it helps customers achieve excellence by improving quality and patient safety through hospital accreditation, managing infection risk, management system certification and training.

DNV GL Healthcare has applied to become the second accreditation organisation in the United States to accredit psychiatric hospitals to participate in the CMS programme. DNV expects to be able to accredit from early 2019.

Psychiatric hospitals must not only meet the same requirements as acute care hospitals to satisfy the Conditions of Participation mandated by (CMS), but must also meet special requirements pertaining to the delivery of psychiatric services, medical record requirements for psychiatric hospitals, and special staff requirements for psychiatric hospitals.

The DNV GL Group operates in more than 100 countries with healthcare providers, national and regional health authorities to improve healthcare quality and patient safety.
