Comparison site WhatClinic.com says that medical tourism hotspots for British couples seeking fertility treatments are Spain, Czech Republic, Turkey, Ireland and Greece, while Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PDG) is set to be the fastest growing fertility trend for 2017.

51,000 people searched for UK fertility clinics in 2016 and 59% of enquiries were for overseas clinics. The top five medical tourism destinations for Brits seeking IVF treatment abroad were Spain (8%), Czech Republic (8%), Turkey (4%), Ireland (8%), and Greece (8%) Starting prices ranged from £821 to £3360, with the Czech Republic and Turkey being below UK prices but Spain. Greece and Ireland are all more expensive than in the UK; even before adding travel and accommodation costs.

Whatclinic.com surveyed 27 fertility clinics around the world about current and growing trends in fertility treatments for 2017:

  • Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is tipped to be the fastest growing trend within fertility in 2017. The procedure is used prior to implantation to help identify genetic defects within embryos created through IVF to prevent certain diseases or disorders from being passed on to the child
  • Fertility specialists are excited about advances in cryopreservation, a technique used to preserve eggs, tissue, sperm and other biological matter by cooling them to very low temperatures
  • Experts are also keenly watching advancements in aneuploidy screening (PGS), a procedure that involves checking the chromosomes of embryos conceived by IVF or ICSI for common abnormalities. Chromosomal abnormalities are a major cause of the failure of embryos to implant, and of miscarriages

The most likely age group for those seeking treatment is 35-44, and the oldest female patient seen by those surveyed was 56, seeking pregnancy through egg donation.
