First Abu Dhabi proton centre

The Proton Centre for Cancer Treatment, the first in the Middle East, is being built in Abu Dhabi.

The Proton Centre for Cancer Treatment, the first of its kind in the Arab region and the Middle East, is being built in the Al-Bahia area of Abu Dhabi, in co-operation with British company Proton Partners International, and in partnership with Al-Sayer Group in Kuwait and Al Fardan Group of the UAE at a cost of US$60 million.

The project is scheduled for opening in the last quarter of 2018, and the centre will by then start receiving patients from the country and abroad. The centre will be known as the Abu Dhabi Proton Centre (ADPC), and will be part of the existing Gulf International Cancer Centre (GICC) in Abu Dhabi.

Proton beam therapy is a highly targeted type of radiotherapy that can treat hard-to-reach cancers, such as spinal tumours, with a lower risk of damaging the surrounding tissue and causing side effects.

Mike Moran of Proton Partners International: “We plan to revolutionise cancer treatment in the UAE. There is a growing need for proton beam therapy treatment around the world, as it has been shown to deliver significant results for patients. Its effectiveness at lowering side effects compared to traditional radiation treatment, is transforming the lives of many thousands of cancer patients. There are no centres that offer proton beam therapy in the Middle East.”

Studies have shown that at least 10% of patients who receive traditional radiotherapy would be treated more effectively with protons. By offering a variety of cancer therapies, this centre will deliver a comprehensive level of cancer care, tailored to fit the different needs of each patient.
