Ho Chi Minh City to promote dental tourism

Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is aiming to develop its dental tourism by targeting Vietnamese citizens living overseas.

Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is keen to develop dental tourism, particularly for Vietnamese citizens now living overseas.

A full range of dental services is available, including cleaning, teeth whitening, dental implants, bone reconstruction orthodontics, ceramic veneers, crowns and bridges.

Dentistry costs in Vietnam are roughly 75 % of the prices in other Asian countries, according to Nguyen Duc Minh of the HCM City Odonto Stomatology Association.

The city has a large number of international and private dental clinics meeting international standards. Despite high quality cosmetic and dental care and affordable costs, local dentistry has not yet fully explored its potential.

100,000 foreign tourists travel to Viet Nam each year as dental tourists, providing revenues of nearly US$150 million, is the claim from the Viet Nam National Administration of Tourism. The administration forecasts the number of dental tourists to soar to 250,000 a year within the next five years. These figures are viewed as being generous and not necessarily based on any evidence.

Dental holiday packages include accommodation, airport transfers, dental consultation and appointments and sightseeing tours. The aim is to offer such packages to tourists and the diaspora.

One plan, yet to be agreed, is that the dentistry industry should come up with a list of accredited clinics to introduce to tourists through tour operators and travel agents. Key target countries are Australia and the USA, due to the large number of overseas Vietnamese in each country.

Another yet to be agreed plan, from the Vietnam Dental Tourism Organisation is a dental tourism club with qualified Vietnamese dentists and professional consultancy from leading experts in the neighbourhood.
