Medical tourism investment in Malaysia

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng wants to make Penang into a medical city with excellent hospitals, highly trained doctors and very affordable care.

The state government seeks to bring in an investment that includes foreign and local investment to enhance health care facilities in the state.

Lim Guan Eng explains: "medical tourism is booming in Malaysia so we will work hard to make Penang a medical city. Investment is important to reinforce Malaysia’s position as the number one medical tourism destination."

One major problem is out of the control of the state. The Penang government wants Putrajaya to expand the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas. The airport’s maximum capacity is 6.5 million passengers, and passenger numbers were 6.25 million in 2015, 6.63 million in 2016 and a projected 7 million in 2017.

American contract manufacturer Paramit has opened a factory in Penang. The site is the region’s largest manufacturing facility for complex medical devices and life sciences instruments, for genetic and molecular testing, robotic surgery, cancer treatment, and industrial products.

A group of companies is collaborating to create Malaysia' first smart city development in Penang, Malaysia. Aspen Vision City will include an ecosystem with a cloud services and technology infrastructure platform to serve both local and international users.

The Penang government wants to get the healthcare, health manufacturing, digital economy and medical tourism sectors to work together on new ways of working at the cutting edge.
