1990s, China has pioneered public health and universal insurance reforms that are unprecedented in scope and scale. Service capacity and use of health services have risen, while aggregate out-of-pocket spending (as borne by patients) as a share of total health expenditures has fallen.

According to the China Tourism Academy more than 2 million Chinese travelled overseas in 2017. Chinese health tourists bound for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan or foreign countries were 2.2% of all outbound visitors in 2017.
