In 2015 the government claimed that 15,000 medical tourists go to Puerto Rico every year, spending an average of $10,000. Family members or friends who make the trip with the patients represent a further economic injection of almost $1,000 each in spending on lodging, meals and transportation.

The Economic Development and Commerce department of Puerto Rico promotes it as a medical tourism destination, especially among the Hispanic population of the Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast, the main target for medical care including dental treatment, liposuction and weight-loss surgery at prices far lower than in the USA.
